Super Readers is a program designed to encourage children to begin reading at a young age and continue to read through adulthood. With the knowledge and skills, they learn and develop through reading, they can then become their own Super Hero. Not through magical powers, but through knowledge.
It is such an honor to tell you a little about the woman who is receiving the 2018 Super Reader Award.
I first met this woman at a book festival in Denton. I knew the moment I met her I had found a kindred spirit.
Like me, she was a widow, with her husband passing away just months from the time that mine did.
She was a new author and was so open to any ideas or knowledge anyone would share with her.
So, we developed a friendship and have, over the years, served on a board together, and attended many conferences and book festivals together.
But, the main reason Judy Lowe deserves this award is due to the way she has gone above and beyond to go to schools and libraries, sometimes as much as eight hours away, just to read to the children and to introduce them to the joys of her stories and of reading.
She has participated in the Kroger Author program for the past three years and I can’t even tell you how many weekends per year you’ll find her at a Kroger store sharing her stories with anyone who will listen. But reading and writing is nothing new to Judy.
She was involved in creating the curriculum for the TAG (Talented and Gifted) program for the Dallas ISD in 1977 and insisted that reading and writing not be overlooked in that curriculum which is still widely used today. After fifty years of teaching school in the classroom, she is now promoting literacy through her own stories, and reading to thousands of people. She always has a smile on her face and a song in her heart and sometimes on her lips. She is generous, kind and supportive and no one deserves this award more than her.
Congratulations, Judy Lowe on being chosen for the 2018 Super Reader Award!
